I am here today because almost 66 years ago, my Uncle Wilbur pulled me out of the bottom of Lindy's Lake in New Jersey. I was 3, maybe 4, sitting on a dock with my cousin Wayne when I fell in. I still have this vision of the gold watch reaching down in front of my face and pulling me back up.
Too much time has passed and too much family is gone. From 2000 miles away, I had this thought today, on Memorial Day, about my father, Wilbur's brother-in-law, a US Army Tech Sgt. in the Pacific Theater, and I wondered if my uncle was still here. Strange indeed that two weeks after he passed I would be thinking of him, the man that pulled me from the bottom of a lake all those years ago,,, the man that saved my life. Thank you Uncle Wilbur,,, and rest in. peace...

As with the loss of any great civic-minded citizen we respond with remorse for how the world will change absent such a valued member of the community. That feeling is compounded when the loss diminishes from the ever shrinking number of veterans that survived the horrors of a world war. For with their loss we lose hard-learned lessons on the pains of conflict and war. May he and all of his generation that has passed look down and protect us from ourselves and each other. Rest In peace Wilbur.
