Obituary of Patrick W Howard

Patrick W. Howard, longtime educator and coach, died on April 20, 2019, at his home in Massapequa.

Pat was born in Amityville on April 26, 1957, the son of Margaret and Lou Howard. He attended St. Martin of Tours elementary school, and graduated from Amityville High School in 1975. He earned a B.S.  in Social Studies from Springfield College, an M.S. from Hofstra, and a Professional Diploma in Educational Administration from The College of New Rochelle.

Pat began his teaching career at John Adams High School in Howard Beach, Queens, in 1986 as a Social Studies teacher. Shortly thereafter, he became Dean of Discipline at John Adams, and later served in the same capacity at Massapequa High School, a position he held for the next 21 years until his retirement in 2017.

Pat’s career as a Town of Babylon lifeguard spanned five decades, primarily at Gilgo Beach and Overlook Beach. He was Assistant Chief Lifeguard for several years, retiring in 2017. During his tenure as a lifeguard, he spent many years as coach of the Town of Babylon Swim Team, and as an American Red Cross instructor in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid.

In addition, Pat coached JV football at Amityville High School for several seasons and was also a CYO swim coach for St. Martin of Tours in Amityville.  He coached Wrestling at John Adams HS and was the Wrestling Chairman for the PSAL for numerous years.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Anette Sturmann, and his daughter, Margot Howard of Massapequa. He is also survived by his mother, Margaret Howard of Amityville and six siblings, Thomas Howard (Pam), Mikey Howard (John Eustace), Bruce Howard, Margaret Ostermann (Dietmar), Jane Schmitt (Robin), and Lou Howard, Jr. and 33 nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his father, Lou Howard, Sr., in 2016.

Visitation is at Powell Funeral Home in Amityville on Wednesday and Thursday, 2:00-4:30 and 7:00-9:30. Funeral Mass at St. Martin of Tours in Amityville at 10:30 am on Friday, April 26, 2019.
