I was very sad to hear of Mr. Howard's passing. I was a student in the graduating class of 2003. It would be an understatement to say I gave him a hard time while I was there. I never mouthed off to him as I did respect my educators. However, I continuously cut class and Mr. Howard made it his mission to track me down every chance he got, and I honestly don't blame him. He had the power to expell me but he never did. I was held back two grades from how much class I missed, but he still let me participate in my class's senior variety show. He was genuinely a great dean and person, even though I didn't realize it at the time. And the small gesture of allowing me to still participate in my graduating class's talent show even though I wouldn't be graduating with them meant so much more to me than he'll ever know as I was finally able to show off my singing talent and got a standing ovation for my performance. And it's because of Mr. Howard that I got to experience such an incredible moment. After all was said and done, I decided to drop out and get my GED. Mr. Howard was certainly relieved, but I think he was proud of me too. It seemed like he always knew I was a good kid deep down and wasn't rebelling simply because I was a slacker, but because I was going through a tough time with being bullied and what not. Anyway, the point is, he was a wonderful educator, leader, disciplinarian and human being. I always meant to go back to MHS to visit him so I could show him that my life was on track, but I just never did and then ended up moving out of state. I'll always regret not seeing him one last time so I could thank him. To his family, I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss. He was too young to go and certainly not ready to leave this Earth. Mr. Howard, I hope you are as happy in heaven as you look in your final photo. Rest in peace, sir. And thank you for everything.

I am so saddened to hear of Patrick Howard's death. I was honored, as a friend of Patrick's brother Bruce Howard years ago and to this day, to feel a part of the amazing family that made Patrick the wonderful person he was. My heart goes out to his wife and daughter, Mrs. Howard, brothers & sisters, neices & nephews. God bless you all and friends as you mourn his passing, but celebrate Patrick's life well lived!

I am genuinely devastated to have heard of Mr Patrick Howard this week. I was a student graduating class of 2003 at Massapequa high school and I was very close to Mr Howard throughout my 3 years at MHS. He was dean of students at the time and he breathed such fresh life into that school staff and was one of my most favorite people around those days. He cared tremendously for each student in my graduating class and he showed it in a million ways that he was not your “ normal educator” but took great pride in his working with the students whom we’re either struggling with their own personal issues, or their educational experiences and he made sure that when you left his office you walked out feeling stronger, he made us hold ourselves accountable for our actions and at that age, it takes only an exceptional spirit to have brought such wonderful things to his students.
I wish I could have told him he was an enormous part of my teenage years and high school experience and he made each and every one of the students I’ve encountered like me feel this way. He www not just an educator but he truly inspired me many times and I so often felt safe enough to to him during times I was struggling with personal issues and he never once dragged someone down but forced myself and my graduating class feel we were worthy of respect and that we were also worthy to go on in into our lives the next years with that feeling of compassion and strength.
I am saddened I only found out of his passing this morning or I would have most definitely gone and attend his funeral services because I would have been able to tell this all face to face to his wife, whom he loved deeply and was absolutely beautiful and I’d liked to have been able to tell his children just what I said above. Their father was an exception not just the norm... and I suppose they know this but I do hope they will read this and take peace that their father made a real difference in his own pat Howard way!.... he was a special person to this community and we have suffered a great loss here.... I will never forget my time spent with mr Howard, May he Rest In Peace... and to his beloved family, I just couldn’t put into words to you all my deepest condolences on the worlds loss of this beautiful soul, teacher and friend.

It is with great sorrow we send our condolences to Patrick’s family. He was a remarkable person filled with gifts of joy, humor, compassion and genuine unconditional love for others. We have so many memories of him and like everyone else all those memories are good. My favorite was Patrick driving over to Monahan’s on Bedell in his small auto with his baby daughter and great beast of a goofy dog to visit and give his wife some resting time. He always made us smile and laugh. And his arrival on those days were memorable. He will be truly missed. Love, Patt and Dom Squicciarini

A great man taken too soon. l had the pleasure of spending time with the Howard family while l worked on their house And got to know Pat outside of school. He was truly a great guy who’s dedication to his students could not be matched. As l got to know pat nothing would surprise you when he came running through his front door. He never just walked anywhere he would always be in a hurry running around. One day the door flies open and through it walks Pat covered in blood all down his arms. He had been spending the afternoon trying to catch a stray cat that was sick to bring it to the vet. Or another time when pat got home late because he spent his afternoon helping a student that came from a troubled family. This kid would ride his bike to school. The one day he came to school extra late because his bike broke. Pat took the kid in his car to the bike shop after school and paid to have his bike fixed out of his own pocket. That’s just a small example of the type of person Pat was and there are many more from where that comes from like helping his elderly neighbor. There are too many things to list. Pat was honestly one of the funniest nicest guys l have gotten the chance to know and l will never forget the time l got to spend with him and will forever be grateful for it.

Thank you to the Howard family for sharing “Howie” with us. My daughter was going through her own thing senior year and not attending school. Mr Howard believed in my daughter and knew her potential like the rest of us did. Going through what a parent like myself went through you could tend to “fight” with administration, which I think I did (not intentionally) . Howie fought for my girl and how thankful I am he did. He saw what she was capable of. My daughter is currently a nursing student at Molloy and I was so happy to have run into him at stuff a bagel and was able to share my daughters success with him. Thank you Howie for your dedication to my daughter and all the other children you helped through out your career at Massapequa. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Let them have some fun in Heaven I am sure my dad will be the one leading the pack. He always loved a good time. .Rest easy.

My son Shawn Lewis and his many friend John, Joe, Mario, Tim, Eric and those I do not remember by name would like Mr. Howard's family to know that he made an immense difference in lives of so many of his students. These boys are now in their mid thirties with successful careers and families. All of them were sadden by the news of Mr. Howard's passing. They want you to know although they spent many hours in detention and the Dean's office his compassion, laughter, way of communicating with them made them better people and more successful adults.
When so many educators would give up or look down on them Mr. Howard reminded them of their potential that they were too smart to be there and talk about the real reason they were rebeling and where the consquences would lead them in the real world. He was the true example of teacher who strived to reach every student and help shape them into successful adults. He is remembered with smiles of his jokes and quick remarks. These men all share in your sorrow but are so thankful their lives were touch by him.

Pat Howard changed my son’s life.
As students in high school most have a “favorite” teacher. My son had one, and only ONE and that was Pat Howard. He played a pivotal role in his and our family lives. That special bond carried over into adulthood. My son doesn’t have many fond memories of school, but Pat Howard was the positive force who steered him in the right direction. My son and family are extremely grateful for Pat's constructive, practical, useful, beneficial, effective handling and teaching of my son and his classmates. We are forever grateful and never will forget. Our deep sympathy and prayers for his family. He will be missed. ~ Nancy Nelson

I am heartbroken to hear this news. We met as my son had visited Mr. Howard’s office often. When my son was in 12th grade he was left a t-4 paraplegic from a terrible accident. Mr. Howard came to the hospital to visit my son & he brought a smile to my son’s face with his humor & quick wit. After 3 months of a hospital stay at Mount Sinai we moved to an apartment in Massapequa & it ended up being a few blocks from Mr. Howard. He would sometimes just stop by to see my son for a few laughs. I would run into him in the stores in the neighborhood & he was always a pleasure to see. His entire face beamed when he spoke about his family. What an all around great guy & mentor. My heartaches for all of his loved ones & all the lives he impacted, as ours are a couple of the lives that he did. Rest Easy Mr. Howard

What can i say? I´m heartbroken here.I´ve known you since 2nd grade, probably 1965 or so.We had a good little St.Martin´s crew (unless maybe if you asked a Nun) and we all loved each other - although we might not have known it then,it took all these years to learn that is what it was.Facebook was good to reconnect, otherwise we wouldn´t have bothered if the bond wasn´t still strong. This Copiague boy met you and so many of the friends you already had. That school was the tool, that brought Copiague,Amityville & Massapequa boys and girls in the same age bracket, together and we would all meet again at our children´s school and Church milestones later on in life,or out and about in the local taverns. It was such a pleasure, that i just won´t get over so easily. What laughs we had! I hear you´ve done very well in your professional life,i´ve read some of your students´ comments - they loved you.To the Howard family,my heart aches for you.He was a shining gem! With much love and respect - and a few tears,Joe O´Connell & family.

My heart is heavy to know that this great guy is no longer walking among us. Not only was Pat my neighbor my entire childhood, but he was also an administrator at Massapequa High School, where my two older boys attended school. Let's just say that one of them spent a little more time in Pat's office than he should have! Pat was always good to my boys and they will always remember him. My deepest sympathy to the Howard families.
