Obituary of Steven A. Robinson, Sr.

Please share a memory of Steven to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Steven Robinson, Sr. was born in Mount Royal, New Jersey on January 19, 1939, the son of the late Richard Randolph and Janet Robinson. When Steve was 7 years old, the family moved to Harlem, NY. When his father was stationed in the navy, Steve was given the roll and responsibilities at an early age, as man of the household. He was required to run errands for his mother, including paying the light and gas bills. He used this opportunity as an entrepreneurial endeavor and offered to also pay the bills of the other tenants in the building, charging them each a nickel and also keeping the subway fare given to him by his mother, choosing to walk instead. When Steve was 15 the family moved to Amityville, NY, a major transition for him from city life. For a while he continued to commute each day to New York City to attend Aviation Trade High School, eventually transferring to Amityville Memorial High School where he graduated in 1956. He met the love of his life, Betty Mitchell, during a church youth night at Holy Trinity Baptist Church. Steve and Betty have been married for over 57 years. Together they had three children Steven, Jr. (deceased), Betty Ann and Scott. They were a couple who was always committed to family and the community of Amityville. Steve loved to travel and looked forward to summer vacations always taking great care in there planning. He loved Hawaii the most, especially the islands of Maui and Oahu where he leaves a host of beloved friends who have become family and will forever love and remember him. For years, Steve was a favorite and popular coach for the Amityville Little League, and dedicated member of the Amityville Kiwanis. Steve worked as a machinist at Pure Gas in Copiague, NY for 10 years. Steve at times worked two jobs, eventually transitioning into sales, as an opportunity to better take care of his family. He retired after over 29 years as a top performing sales representative for Proctor and Gamble. After surviving a heart attack and during his retirement years, Steve enjoyed one of his many passions; cooking, attending the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Steve also became an avid walker and a part of the Sunrise Westfield Mall early morning walking community where he garnered many new dear friends along with the loving and infamous title of “Mayor of the Mall.” Steve was without a doubt revered and loved by many. He will be fondly and lovingly remembered as husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle, coach, mentor, and friend. He is lovingly survived by his beloved wife, Betty, his daughter Betty Ann, his son, Scott, 6 grandchildren, Sheldon, Travis, Jalen, Fannique, Catherine and Morgan, 2 sisters Thelma and Vivian, 3 brother’s in-law, 2 sister’s in-law, 2 daughter’s in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Steve taught and instilled in his children, grandchildren and those that he mentored to never be afraid of a challenge, to set your goals first and then go achieve them, to never ever blame a setback on someone else just go out and make a comeback, to be a faithful father first no matter what, to be dedicated, to be focused, be tough but fair, to be opinionated but never arrogant, to be strong and faithful to those that you love, to be aggressive but never cocky and always make sure you can back up whatever you believe in. Steve exemplified that he was one of the strong soldiers that God would someday invite into His Kingdom. Cancer could take his body, but it never ever took away his spirit, legacy, impact, drive, tenacity, mentorship, unconditional support and love that he gave to his family and friends. Steve “went home”, as he spoke so many times during the days preceding his transition, to be with the Lord, during the very early morning of December 31, 2015 with his wife, daughter and son by his side. New Year's Eve will now, always be known to his loved ones as Steve's going home celebration....what an awesome celebration it will always be for the rest of our lives!!
