Me earliest memory of Cousin Jim was that steely blue eyed stare, and that big mustache that he would comb over his bottom lip
Cuz was without a doubt the first person outside my Dad that I thought was Cool. He was always dynamic and he seemed bigger than life. Anytime I saw Cuz from when I was young enough to remember up to early last year, I was always greeted with that easy Jim smile and a “Whats Buzzin Cuzzin “ Cuz was always genuinely happy to see me, and he was always upbeat and positive, even through his illness.
Years later as a young man in business for myself Cuz reached out to me to do his kitchen. I was truly honored that he did. This would lead to me as a cabinet maker, customizing whatever new motorcycle trailer he purchased so he could sleep in it and max out the storage. It gave us a great opportunity to spend time together.
In speaking of that steely blue eyed stare. I can still see him in my side view mirror walking up to my van after he pulled me over on Oak Street heading into Amityville. He was in his usual perch on Lake Street next to the park. He comes walking up all serious, one hand on his gun with that Sam Elliot steely blue eyed stare, until he saw it was me. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. My wife Jessica had the pleasure of being pulled over by him one morning not soon after. Sharing this story last week, my brother Brian told me Cuz pulled him over too. HaHa!
A few years ago when Jims Mom, my beloved Aunt Babette passed away, I got up at her wake to say a few words about how much she meant to me. In speaking of my Aunt I couldn’t possibly not include my Uncle Jim, Jims Dad. Given the opportunity I could spout on endlessly about my Love and Respect for them. And how good they were to me and my Brothers throughout our lives
When I eulogized my Aunt Babs I read a list of words that came to mind while thinking of her and my Uncle. The words were Love, Family, Respect, Honesty, and Integrity. I said to most people these were just words, but to my Aunt Babs and Uncle Jim they were the cornerstones of the Ideals that they lived by. They instilled those Ideals onto their children. My Cousin Jim lived his life true to everyone of those ideals and more.
Cuz Thank You for reaching out to me from time to time so that we could stay connected. Thank You for being one of the true constants in my life. I’ll be forever grateful to have known You and Loved You, and You will never be forgotten. I Love You Brother

You were by far the best man I ever knew. Dedicated, honest, humble and always willing to help anybody. Your boys are all good men and wouldn’t be with out you. My heart breaks that you’re gone. I love you uncle Jimmy. Rest in peace and honor. Wendy

returning to Long Island regularly for Vacations and Holidays, while growing up, I saw Cousin Jimmy as a Leather Jacketed, Motorcycle Rock Star. He was tall and handsome, smiled naturally and with ease. He showed he liked me and respected me. Cousin Jim, made me feel comfortable. I wanted to be like him. I only have simple memories of him. All these years I thought he was a Fireman! A sailor, a cop, not so much. But a First Responder. Heroic. The greatest thing I recall is ... 20 some years ago, as an adult visiting to see Aunt Babett (also the rest of the Smiths). I wanted to take the train into NYC to visit the site of the World Tade Center (post 9-11) and also Christopher Street. A small Ohio town guy into the City? I was cautioned by all, not a good idea. BUT, Jimmy took me aside and marked my rail map the routes and stops to get there.. He showed his, and saw my, faith that I could and should go. Such a good guy. Jim, I will never forget those times our family paths crossed. Rest in Peace, "Carrot Top". AKA, Ricky Haynes

I had the opportunity and the pleasure of working with Jim in 1985 while I was a seasonal police officer with the APD. Jim was one of few officers who treated me with dignity and respect. For those of you who ever worked as a seasonal police officer will know what I mean. Quite frankly as a seasonal police officer at least on APD you were lower than the bottom of the totem pole. Jim was a true gentleman and a great person. He also served his county in the US Navy. After my quick season with the APD I went on to the NYPD. I was still living in the village. Jim would always stop by and visit me and my family. He was truly interested in my career and me as a person. My family truly respected him. I left NY and the NYPD and had a great career with the best Police Department in the Nation. I was in contact with Jim for a number of years and would see him upon visiting NY. He was always asking about my career and my family. He truly cared. We lost touch many years ago but I will never forget Jim. I'm saddened by his passing. My condolences to all his former colleagues and to his entire family. God Bless Jim Smith.

All the Lenze’s were so saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. He was the neighbor that everyone wishes they had. I have no doubt that Darla ( our dog who loved him more than us) was waiting there to run to him like she always did when she saw him. Our deepest sympathy to his family, friends and anyone who was lucky enough to have met him.
