Obituary of Joyce A Miller

Please share a memory of Joyce to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joyce Agatha Miller was born on August 20, 1943, in Mt. Grace, Tobago to Ebenezer Anthony and Iona Peterkin.  She was one of 12 children born to Ebenezer and Iona, and she was the 9th eldest sibling.  Joyce passed away on September 24, 2022, at NYU Langone Hospital in Mineola, NY, after a very short battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Joyce earned a nursing degree in Trinidad, and shortly thereafter, traveled to NY in 1969 for vacation, and ended up staying and pursuing her career in nursing.  Joyce worked as a Registered Nurse at a few hospitals in NY before accepting a position as a Registered Nurse at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.  Joyce was a highly skilled nurse and trained in many nursing specialties.  Joyce worked for 40 years before retiring from St. John’s in 2009.

Joyce met Emmanuel “Manny” Miller, via a mutual friend, within a few days of her arrival in the United States from Trinidad, and after a brief courtship they got married on May 10, 1970.  Joyce and Manny have two daughters, Nicole Morris and Stacy Cowan.  Joyce’s daughters were truly her pride and joy.  She often referred to them as her “Princesses/Queens”, “Miss Universe” and “Miss America.” Her daughters remained the apple of her eyes, and she was also blessed with three grandsons, Miles Cowan, Roman Morris and Grant Cowan.

Joyce and Manny enjoyed a full life together and loved traveling, partying and meeting new people.  Joyce was always ready to go meet up somewhere with friends and family, or to welcome people into her home and offer them a meal or beverage.  She was a trusty sidekick to all, and there whenever you needed her.  Joyce loved going for daily walks in the local park, and tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Indeed, Joyce was well-known for being a very health conscious and active person before she suddenly got sick.  She also loved to shop and made sure that she looked presentable wherever she went.

Joyce is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Emmanuel Miller; her daughters Nicole Morris and Stacy Cowan; son-in-law Mo Cowan; grandchildren Miles Cowan, Roman Morris, and Grant Cowan; siblings Neville Anthony, Rita McKain, Sybil Edwards, Daphne Edwards, Earl Anthony; sisters-in-law Esther Anthony, Delores Anthony, Rose Anthony; brothers-in-law Ashton Edwards, Earl Edwards, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends who will cherish her memory and miss her immensely.  Joyce was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and will forever remain in our hearts.
