Obituary of Laverne P. Thompson

Laverne Thompson, affectionately known as “Vern” entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.

She was born November 7, 1944 to the late Mr. Joe Sr. and Mrs. Estoria Powell. Preceding her into Paradise is her husband Mr. Samuel Thompson; 2 Brothers: Mr. Joe Powell Jr. and Mr. Jonathan R. Powell; 3 sisters: Mrs. Rosa B Hall, Mrs. Emily Hill and Mrs. Lizzie E. Rivers.

LaVerne was a native to Irwin County, Georgia. Graduating from Ocilla High Industrial School, she went on to further her education by attended Ben Hill County Training School to become a Licensed Pratical Nurse. Laverne was a resident of Brooklyn and Amityville New York where she had a successful career at Interfaith Medical Center Hospital as a labor and delivery nurse, and at Huntington Hills Nursing Home until retiring in 2011.

Laverne loved the Lord. She joined Pine Bloom Baptist Church at an early age. After moving to Brooklyn New York she joined St. Matthews Baptist Church. When she moved to Amityville New York she joined St. Matthias Ministries. She loved to share her passion for traveling, cooking, baking, family gatherings, and sharing her life’s experiences with all who sought her knowledge and wisdom. Laverne honestly enjoyed life to the fullest and had a lovely sense of humor. She left a loving and unforgettable impression on all that have been apart of her journey.

Laverne leaves behind to carry on her legacy her children; Anteaumus (Tim) E. (Brenda) Powell, and LaVenja R. Thompson, Romona Sales and Greg Thompson her siblings: Alden Jerome (Bobbie)Powell, Llewelyn Powell, Grant Steven (Diann) Powell, Annette Sirmans, Phyllistine(Dossie) Pierce, Phaustine(Milton) Marshall, Zanthia Hollis; her grand children: Timothy Anderson, Samuel Thompson, Khaliq York, Maalik York, Elijah Sales, Anaya Powell, Kiara Powell and host of Nieces and nephews and cousins.
