Thanks Coach for creating something that touched the hearts and minds of so many. For me, you helped instill my love for swimming and bringing diversity to the sport. To think I have a career in education, swimming & DEI that I attribute to the experiences had with the team and the lessons you taught me. Thank you. Your legacy will certainly live on through all of us and I hope to continue to make you proud. Rest in Power Coach. With love, Alley Rhoden

My deepest condolences to Coach Trot wife and children. My brother and I grew up poor in the public housing development, Albany Houses across the street from St. Johns' Recreation Center. And he always, treated me with respect and dignity. I really appreciated it, because at times I was teased a lot for being poor. Coach Trot, always made me feel important.
I'm so thankful for the life lesson of swimming, because it allowed me to work as a teenager and young adult as a lifeguard.
Rest Well Coach, job well done. Gone but never forgotten.

Thank you for everything Coach. You gave this awkward kid from Queens something to believe in and an extended family to belong to. What you taught us surpassed the swimming pool. To this day, your voice is the only one I’ve ever heard while swimming. It didn’t matter where you were in the pool. And then to look up, take a breath and see you in between strokes meant it was “go time”. You always made sure we dug in deep and gave the very best we had. I didn’t always get those lessons then, but I more than understand them now.
Coach was definitely a force, and he will be sorely missed by all ❤️

My deepest condolences to the Trotsman’s family. I will forever treasure the dedication and passion for swimming that Coach instilled in me. My family and friends call me a mermaid because of the love that I have for swimming. Thanks Coach for sharing your skills with me and countless others. I’m honored to say that it’s because of you that I am the swimmer that I am at 48 year’s old. I joined Trot’s Finmen 1985 at 10 years old in Hempstead, NY.

Coach made me feel like I wasn’t an outsider. He taught me that the color of my skin wasn’t ever going to be more important than the measurement of my character. He showed me what it meant to treat people like family. He made me understand the value of working hard, in the water, in school, in life. He held me to a higher standard than I could ever hold myself. I owe who I became as an athlete and a professional to him. His many lessons and speeches, the same one she told us over and over, we’re funny to think about then. As an adult, it’s sobering to see that everything he said was true.
One of my most precious memories of Coach is at a swim meet at Lehman College. I couldn’t have been older than 12. It was the first time I was swimming 100M fly in a meet. The only time I swam fly before that was during practice or a punishment 1000 fly set. I was scared to even try.
I have vivid memories of his voice, loud and clear, screaming “Go Dina! Swim Dina! Keep your head down Dina!” every time I came above water to breathe. I can still see him out the corner of my eye, walking along side the pool deck as I made my way down the pool. I touched the wall long before everyone else. I won the heat and I placed in the event. I still have the tiny medal they gave to me for that event. I don’t know why that specific race sticks out to me. Maybe it was the way he cheered me on. Maybe it was the way he told me he was proud of me after the race. Either way, I never forgot that day. Fly became my stroke in high school and college. I placed at UAAs in the 100y fly as a junior in College. Even so, my 12 year old medal still feels more important.
Coach was more than just a Coach to me, as I know he was to everyone. He will be missed, never forgotten, and I look forward to seeing the team carry on his legacy. Thank you Coach, for everything.

One of the greatest things about coach was his able to always make you feel equal . we would often find ourselves at pools tht were not frequented by minorities and we would go with our heads high and chest out proclaiming victory and displaying our culture with all confidence. With that vision at least for me , It always made me walk into every situation of adversity in my life with that attitude. One of the countless things that come to mind when I think of all the things him and his family did for me and mine. love you all
