Obituary of Florence N. Leavy

Please share a memory of Florence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Florence Noreen Leavy (nee Schmidt) died on December 31, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Florence was born on October 19, 1937 in New York, NY. Entering the world 2 months premature at 2 lb 11 oz, her chances of survival were slim. Her tenacity and passion for life were apparent from the very start. Florence was the daughter of Jack (d.) and Brigid Collins Schmidt (d.), and grew up in College Point, NY, where she attended St. Fidelis Elementary School and St. Agnes High School, then went on to work at the New York Foundling Hospital. In 1957 she married Thomas D. Leavy and they shared almost 65 years of an extraordinary and faith-filled marriage. Florence graduated from Nassau Community College and became a registered nurse in 1973. She worked at Franklin General Hospital, Nassau Community College, Nursing Sisters Home Visiting Service, and Family Care. She was very active with volunteer work at church, Teams of Our Lady, and she enjoyed bowling and sewing. Florence was the loving mother of Mary Vaeth (John), Michael (Patricia), Donna Lech (Jozef), Anne Prial (Gregory), Maureen “Mia” Holman (James), and Joseph (Laura). She was the proud grandmother of 17 grandchildren: Paul Vaeth (Brittany), Carolyn Vaeth, and Emily Vaeth; Dawn Neenan (Daniel), Brian Leavy (Anna), and Tricia Leavy; Theresa Budd (Matthew) and David Weiler (Amber); Rebecca Fullam (Joseph), Terence Prial (Abbie), Daniel Prial (in heaven), Brigid Prial, and Jennifer Prial; Mary Kate Holman (engaged to Mark DeMott) and Laura Holman; Peter Leavy and Theodore Leavy. Her great grandchildren are Everly, Greyson, and Paxton Vaeth; Conor (in heaven), Matthew, and Michelle Neenan; Joshua Budd; Vincent Weiler; and Samuel & Ada Fullam. She leaves behind her beloved sister Jacqueline Barlow (Joseph) and joins her brother John in heaven. She is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Birthright or American Life League. Florence wished for her funeral to be a joyful event and invited attendees to feel free to wear attire reflective of such a celebration. Masks are required at the wake and funeral.
