My mother will always be one of the great loves of my life. She knew me in a way that no one else ever will. She knew the softest and hardest parts of my heart.
First and foremost my mother loved her family and friends. A dear friend recently pointed out that you could go without seeing Mom for years and show up at 3 AM and she would welcome you with open arms and a blanket. She was the first of six children who she loved with all of her heart. Patricia Fellman was like a sister and Gordy Hill like a big brother. Their love and comfort was there until the end.
She worked as a nurse for over 50 years and loved her work family too. She was respected and loved by colleagues and patients in the ER, as a flight nurse and an assistant in pain management.
Mom taught me so many things big and small from my prayers and trusting my instincts about love and people to choosing the “right” mayonnaise, potato salad and cheesecake. She passed on her love of time with friends, flowers and happy endings.
She asked me once how I described her to friends. I had recently done so and shared that I said she was a cross between Florence Nightingale and Linda Evans with a little Dirty Harry thrown in for good measure. She smiled.
Mom was married to Stewart Gilman and he made her happy for almost twenty years. The Gilman family welcomed Mom with a kindness and devotion that has been a gift.
I am forever grateful that I was able to be with her for her final days and hold her tiny hands. The last thing we did together before her surgery was say The Our Father with Elizabeth. It’s a memory that I’ll cherish forever.
I miss her.❤️
Pam

Our heartfelt condolences to all the family at this most difficult time. Barbara was a dear & loved friend over so many years.
From the early days in Massapequa Park to her years in Orlando so many cherished moments were shared with Barbara. Throughout this time she was always someone who possessed a twinkle in her eye, a smile on her face & a warm embrace for all those fortunate enough to know her. There was never a sense that she was doing anything because she was required to but instead there was a genuine desire to be available to others because she wanted to.
Her love & commitment to her family was ever present. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren & her siblings. She of course was always very happy to share in occasions where she was surrounded by her beloved family. To Barbara these were always moments to savour.
In her professional capacity she achieved so very much & gave of herself to the benefit of so many over the fifty year tenure she served. Barbara always communicated a positive message in her words as well as actions to those who were confronted by a variety of medical challenges. With the prevailing worldwide scenario as a result of the pandemic the appreciation & awareness of those in the medical profession for all they provide is clearly in focus. Barbara would certainly be at the forefront of this recognition.
While we profoundly miss Barbara today her many positive qualities & the memories of so many enjoyable times shared will of course long endure.
With sympathy to all the family,
The Barrett family

Barbara and I were best friends in high school and remained good friends well into adulthood. I eventually moved to Florida, and Barbara moved to Orlando with her family soon after. When our kids were young, Barbara and her family would spend many weekends at my home near the beach. I will miss and love her always. My love to Pam, Tricia, Kevin Jr., and her siblings.
