Obituary of Carmen Richard Sorvillo

Carmen Richard “Rick” Sorvillo, 73, of Massapequa, NY passed away on December 11, 2020. Rick is predeceased by his parents, Victory Day and Philomena Sorvillo, and his sister Carol Fitzgerald (Bob). Rick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty (nee Bisset); his daughters: Heather Horstmann (Peter), Victoria Weidemann (Klaus), Gina Sorvillo (Dan Garone); his grandchildren: Peter Jr., Abigail, Chloe, and Daniel; his sister Linda Padell (Jeff); and an uncle and aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and longtime friends. Rick was born in Brooklyn, NY on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16th, 1947. After attending St. Elizabeth’s School, he graduated from John Adams High School in Ozone Park, NY in 1964. Rick is a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam Era, where he served honorably in the Army Corp of Engineers, Panama Canal Zone, and achieved the rank of Spec 5. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from the NY Institute of Technology in 1979, a Master of Science in Energy Management from the NY Institute of Technology in 2002, and a Master of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2009. He was also a Licensed Master Plumber in the City of NY. Rick retired from the Port Authority of NY and NJ in 2010 after 33 years of dedicated service. He held numerous positions of increasing responsibility in design, construction, and project management at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, World Trade Center, and Port Authority Trans Hudson (PATH). He responded to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Rick proudly ended his career at the Port Authority as the Project Manager of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub Oculus. Rick dedicated his life to family, work, and his community. He was his daughters’ softball coach, served on the Massapequa School Board from 1993 - 1999, and was the past president and longtime member of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) – NYC Chapter. He was an avid Dodgers fan, Spring Training enthusiast, curator of sports and entertainment memorabilia, Dion and Doo Wop devotee, world traveler, and enjoyed spending time with his family at their Lake St. Catherine, Vermont home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.tunnel2towers.org) would be appreciated. All CDC recommended guidelines will apply to everyone entering the building; face coverings must be worn at all times, social distancing throughout the premises, limited physical and interaction. Because of the limited capacity regulations (33% which equals 40 people at a time in the chapel at Powell Funeral Home, Inc.) as set by New York State, we ask that all visitors limit their time with the family so as to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pay their respects. As people vacate the building, additional mourners will be permitted to enter.
