Rauha Viola Saarinen, 93, formerly of Amityville, New York passed away peacefully, Sunday morning July 19, 2020 at Riverton Estates Retirement Home, Riverton, New Jersey where she lived for seven years. She was the loving wife of Arne Johannes Saarinen who died on March 29, 1992. They were married for 42 years. She was the loving mother of Harry Robert Saarinen who passed away on February 18, 2012. Rauha, aka as Viola to many, was born in Kemi, Finland on February 1, 1927. She was the daughter of the late William Tulkki and Aino Merilainen. Rauha came to the US in 1948 and moved to New York City where she became a hat designer for a prestigious bridal company. Her bridal hat and veil designs were highly sought after when she made the cover of Bride magazine. She met her husband at a Finnish dance hall in NYC and they wed in May 1950 and moved to Long Island. Later, she worked at Brunswick Hospital for many years in her hometown of Amityville, NY. She was a creative person and enjoyed sewing, knitting and making crafts. She was active in her Scandanavian Club and carried out her Finnish traditions of cooking Pulla and other Finnish delicacies. She loved nature especially tending to her beautiful flower gardens. She and her family enjoyed boating, fishing and clamming on the Great South Bay which they did regularly in the summer. Nothing pleased her more than watching the swans and ducks gather in the backyard of their waterfront home. She cherished spending time with her family and friends and she took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren grow up. Survivors include one daughter, Nina Bart and her husband, Don, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and three grandchildren, Donald Bart and his wife, Felicia and grandson, Chase of Severna Park, MD, Emily Bart (Marlton, NJ) and Tara Saarinen (Largo, FL). She was predeceased by one sister, Tyyne Hortana in Halstahammer, Sweden. She has one many more relatives including nephews and nieces in Sweden and Finland and a step daughter, Mona Lisa Saarinen and her family in the Canary Islands, Spain. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Riverview Estates, Activities Department, 303 Bank Street, Riverton, New Jersey.
