Henry W. Mangels
"Hank"
March 27, 1937-July 13, 2019
Hank Mangels, 82, passed away peacefully and comfortably surrounded by his wife, Doris "Pat" Mangels and his children, Donald, Bruce, Dorene and Robert.
Hank was born to August and Margot Mangels in Rockaway Beach, NY. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Conrad Schneider. He had fond childhood memories of growing up with his brother Hank Schneider, and spending time at York Lake in New Marlborough, MA.
Hank met Pat at the Stock Car Races in Freeport, NY. They were married May 18, 1963. He was a loving and thoughtful husband. Their houseboat at Gilgo Beach was their "summer home" where they enjoyed the wonders of boating, beach life and lifelong friends.
Upon retirement from British Airways, Pat and Hank traveled extensively in their camper, visiting all but one of the continental United States and parts of Canada. Hank was gifted with an exceptional memory and could tell you in detail the events of their travels and friends they made along the way.
Woodsmoke Campground, in Fort Myers, FL has been their "winter home" since 2007. Hank rode his bike 5 miles a day and spoiled all his dog friends with treats. He bowled, played shuffleboard, swam in the pool, and went to many dances and car shows with his remarkable friends there. Hank and Pat were teens of the 50's musical generation and danced the lindy into retirement.
When they were home in Amityville, NY, many weekends and holidays were spent enjoying his 8 grandchildren, Christopher, Nicole, Madison, Arik, Serena, Lukas, Sara, Robbie and his precious great granddaughter, Riley. They learned many things from Grandpa. He taught them about fishing, Lionel Trains, and classic cars. Hank truly adored and was proud of all his grandchildren.
Hank was blessed with a large extended family, all of whom were touched by his love for life. He valued the connections he made throughout his lifetime. His In-Laws, Bryan and Donna Burton were especially important to him. Hank thought of Bryan as a brother. The Mangels and Burton families grew up together in Amity Harbor.
The family would like to thank all who have offered their love and support during his illness and transition. We are especially grateful to those who gave their time, words and actions as Hank neared the end of his life. A special thank you to the staff of Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital for their kind and compassionate care. We are grateful to each of you.
