Obituary of Dorothy E. Johnston
Dorothy E Johnston (née Butler) of Amityville, NY, died on March 22, 2019 at her home in Stuart, FL, at the age of 98.
Dorothy Emma Butler was born in the Bronx, NY to Norman and Helen Butler on September 3, 1920. She worked for Sperry Gyroscope Company during WWII, and for many years as a bookkeeper at the A&P supermarket in Amityville. Later, she and her husband, Lawrence Johnston, purchased a family marina, which they named Johnston Marine, on South Ketcham Ave. in Amityville and ran that business together for 30 years prior to their retirement. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Lake George, NY and Lake Sunapee, NH, and the Florida Keys. In her later years, she traveled extensively to Western Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and the Orient. She always loved a pretty view of the water or a beautiful sunset. She spent as much time as possible outdoors and with her family, doing whatever she could to help and encourage her loved ones.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Robert Johnston of Stuart, FL and Carol Wade of East Northport, NY and their spouses, Joyce Johnston and Gustave Wade. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Jessie (Russell) Emery of Phoenixville, PA; Gustave (Caren) Wade, Jr. of Smithtown, NY, Gary (Reneé) Wade of Babylon, NY and Daryl Wade; Robert (Dawn) Johnston, Jr. of Cummings, GA and Todd (Stephanie) Johnston of Suwanee, GA; and nine great grandchildren (Ashley, Dustin and Allison Wade; Russell T. and Turner Emery; and Andrew, Emily, Dylan and Cameron Johnston). Her brother, Arthur Butler, resides in Panama City, FL. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years, Lawrence Johnston of Amityville, NY and their eldest son, Lawrence Johnston, Jr. as well as her parents, Norman and Helen Butler and sister, Marie Cruit.
