Obituary of Leona Washington

She answered the masters call on November 28, 2016. Leona Josephine Logan was born to Robert Lee Logan and Bertha Annie Brown on April 25, 1920 in Asheville, NC. Leona met and married the late Herman Washington, Sr. on November 10, 1945 in Bronx, NY. From this union they had 3 children Cynthia, Rosalie & Herman Jr. In 1952 they moved to Lindenhurst, NY and New Light Baptist Church was started in their home. While taking care of her daughter Rosalie, she started a new career as a Mental Health Therapy Aide at Suffolk State Developmental Center. In 1982, she retired and became a foster grandparent and then a Senior Companion at the Wyandanch Senior Nutrition Center. Leona worked tirelessly through the community. Over the years she was active in New Light Baptist Church as a Deaconess, Missionary, and also known as Mother Washington. She was also involved with the Kiwanis Club & the VFW- where she was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Proceeding her in death by her husband Herman, Sr. and daughter, Rosalie, her mother, Bertha Brown, and two brothers, Grady Logan and Furman Brown and sister Lillian Underwood. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter Cynthia Wood (Craig), one son Herman Washington, Jr. (Evelyn), her grandchildren- Jimmy Cofield, Nicole Jones (Michael), Jason Washington, Wanda Collins, Jeanine Joseph, Andrea Wood, great grandchildren- Adrienne, Nicholas, Jalen, Marley, Wanraya, great-great grandchildren- Dominique, Tristan, Godchildren- Patricia Brathwaite, Randy Fitzgibbons, Valerie Runge and a host of relatives, friends, and church family.
